Description
Yoichi Single Malt Non-Peated is a no age statement, cask strength release from Nikka's Yoichi distillery on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido, owned by Asahi. Released for the European market in 2021, it is notable for deliberately setting aside the peated barley that defines most Yoichi releases, instead showcasing what the distillery's coal-fired distillation and maritime climate deliver without smoke as the primary driver.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks, the profile centres on citrus, with the vanilla and light stone fruit notes typical of bourbon oak at this site. The coal-fired direct distillation still leaves the spirit with more body and texture than a steam-heated alternative, giving the non-peated character a firm malt backbone. Bottled at 47% cask strength, it is a pointed departure and an informative comparison to the peated standard range.
