Description
Yoichi Single Malt Rum Wood Finish is a no age statement expression from Nikka's Yoichi distillery on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido, owned by Asahi. Released globally in 2017, it takes Ex-Bourbon matured Yoichi spirit and gives it a final period in rum casks, adding a layer of tropical sweetness to the distillery's characteristically robust and slightly smoky base.
The rum cask finish brings dried fruit, vanilla, cooked fruit and honey to the fore, with leafy and leathery qualities adding complexity in the background. Despite the sweeter finish, the underlying coal-fired distillation character of Yoichi gives the spirit enough firm malt backbone to keep the profile balanced. Bottled at 46%, it sits comfortably between the distillery's standard NAS and its cask strength releases.
