Description
Yoichi Single Malt Peaty and Salty is a no age statement, cask strength domestic release from Nikka's Yoichi distillery on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido, owned by Asahi. Bottled at 55% in 2015 as part of a Japan-only 500ml series exploring different facets of the distillery's character, it highlights the coastal and peaty side of Yoichi most directly.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks, the profile runs to coal-gas, medicinal and cooked vegetable notes alongside fragrant, green and hay-like qualities. The salt and peat combination that defines coastal Hokkaido whisky is fully expressed here, owing to the maritime location and the coal-fired direct distillation that gives Yoichi spirit its heavier, oilier texture and pronounced smoky backbone.
