Description
Yoichi 26 Years Old 1987 is a single cask, vintage single malt from Nikka's Yoichi distillery on the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido, owned by Asahi. Distilled in 1987 and bottled in 2014 after 26 years in wood, it was selected and released by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society as cask 116.20 for the German market, carrying the SMWS's characteristic uncut, unfiltered presentation at 61.6% cask strength.
The cask is a virgin oak puncheon, an unusual choice for a Japanese whisky of this age, which typically brings forward intense tannin, resinous wood and vanilla alongside the spirit's natural character. The recorded tasting note of mossy and earthy qualities fits both the long contact with new wood and the cool, humid Hokkaido maturation environment. Yoichi's coal-fired distillation character and the decades in virgin oak make this one of the more structurally assertive single cask expressions to emerge from the distillery.
