Yamazakura Rum Cask Finish is a no age statement blended malt from Sasanokawa Shuzo in Fukushima prefecture, bottled in 2022 at 46% for the German market. The rum cask finish places it firmly within the adventurous wing of the Yamazakura line, reflecting Sasanokawa Shuzo's willingness to explore wood finishes beyond the traditional sherry and wine cask options.
The whisky begins in Ex-Bourbon casks before moving to rum casks for finishing, a sequence that builds from vanilla and cereal into tropical territory: molasses, brown sugar and a faint tropical fruit note that the rum wood introduces. At 46% the finish character is present without dominating, sitting as a distinct and pleasantly surprising layer over the bourbon-rested base.
