Description
This 1998 Yamazaki comes from Suntory's Osaka Prefecture distillery, Japan's oldest malt site, set in the humid Shimamoto valley between Osaka and Kyoto where maturation runs deep. Bottled in 2013 at 15 Years Old for the Japanese market, it is a single cask drawn at full strength, away from the blended balance of the core range.
Maturation took place in a single Oloroso sherry butt, the wood behind Yamazaki's richest expressions. At 60% and undiluted it carries dense dried fruit and dark chocolate, a thread of clove and warm oak, with the distillery's orchard fruit beneath. Deep and slow to open, it rewards time in the glass and shows how fifteen years of sherry maturation build the house style into something layered, dark and warming.
