Description
Yamazaki, Suntory's Osaka Prefecture distillery, was Japan's first dedicated malt site, founded in 1923 in the humid valley between Osaka and Kyoto. This 1998 vintage was bottled in 2013 at 15 Years Old for the Japanese market, a single cask drawn at full strength and distinct from the rounded consistency of the core range.
Maturation was in a single Oloroso sherry butt, the wood behind the distillery's deepest expressions. At 60% and undiluted it shows fig and bittersweet chocolate, a note of walnut and warm baking spice, with orchard fruit pressed beneath the sherry. Rich and concentrated, it benefits from a little water and time in the glass to reveal the layered, fruit and sherry house character typical of long matured Yamazaki.
