Description
Distilled by Suntory at its Osaka Prefecture distillery, the first malt site in Japan, this 1998 Yamazaki matured in the soft humidity of the Shimamoto valley where three rivers converge. Bottled in 2013 at 15 Years Old for the Japanese market, it is a single cask expression at natural strength rather than a blended core whisky.
The whisky rested in a single Oloroso sherry butt, the wood that drives Yamazaki's darker character. At a softer 54% it is rounded and approachable, with raisin and cocoa, dried apricot and warm spice carrying the distillery's orchard fruit. Lower in strength than many of its single cask siblings, it shows the house balance of fruit and sherry without needing much water to open.
