Description
This 1998 Yamazaki was distilled by Suntory at its Osaka Prefecture distillery, the oldest malt site in Japan, where the damp Shimamoto valley pushes maturation forward. Drawn from a single cask at 14 Years Old and bottled in 2012 for the European market, it is a full strength expression rather than a component of the softer core whiskies.
The spirit matured in an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood that gives Yamazaki its richer, fruit laden side. At 61% it is full and warming, with raisin and dried orange, dark chocolate and warm spice over the distillery's orchard fruit. Big at cask strength, it opens with a drop of water to show the layered sherry character the house draws from active Spanish oak, balancing dark fruit against the underlying spirit.
