This Tequila Cask edition of Writers' Tears Single Pot Still comes from Walsh Whiskey in Co. Carlow, bottled in 2023 for the Dutch market. Single pot still is the Irish style built on a mash of malted and unmalted barley, its unmalted share giving the peppery spice and oily body. It carries no age statement and was finished in a cask that held anejo tequila.
After ex-bourbon American oak, the anejo tequila cask adds an earthy, vegetal sweetness and a hint of agave to the honey and orchard fruit. Bottled undiluted at 47%, the whiskey is full and characterful, the pot still spice threading through the unusual finish. An adventurous cask choice in the modern Irish style.
