This single malt from West Cork Distillers' Maritime range is matured in virgin oak casks from Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky, meaning fresh, uncharred American oak rather than a refill barrel. It comes from the independent distillery in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, and is bottled at 46%.
New oak works quickly and assertively, giving strong vanilla, baking spice and a toasted, slightly resinous woodiness that frames the malt's own fresh, cereal character. The higher 46% strength helps the spirit stand up to the wood. Bottled without an age statement for the European market, it shows West Cork's willingness to push its casks harder than most.
