Description
The Glengarriff Series is West Cork Distillers' experimental cask line, named for the wooded harbour village east of the distillery's Skibbereen home in Co. Cork. This single malt, released around 2017, sits in the peat charred strand of that series, where the smoke comes not from the barley but from the wood.
The malt matures in first fill ex-bourbon barrels whose interiors have been charred over peat fires, a treatment that lays a soft, earthy woodsmoke over the spirit rather than the medicinal peat of a smoked mash. Underneath runs a nutty, chocolate tinged malt with a citric lift, bottled unpeated in character at 43%. The distillery's own malt gives it a fresh, cereal backbone.
