This Family Reserve release from W.D. O'Connell is a single bourbon barrel of Cooley single malt, cask 2158, bottled at 20 years old in 2022, 210 bottles at a full 57.9%. There is no finishing cask, just two decades of American oak on the double distilled spirit Cooley makes in Co. Louth, presented in the bonder's plainly credited style.
Pure ex-bourbon maturation of this length is a clear glass on the distillate, vanilla pod, coconut and ripe pear deepening into wax and slow building oak spice. At cask strength it is punchy, and a little water brings out honey and lemon oil without losing the creamy texture. For drinkers who want to taste aged Cooley itself rather than a cask finish, this is the shape to look for.
