Description
A companion Family Reserve pick from W.D. O'Connell, this 20 Years Old Cooley single malt spent its long first act in ex-bourbon wood before a rum cask finish, bottled as single cask 90969 at an undiluted 54% in 2022. The bonder names its source plainly, Cooley in Co. Louth, the double distilling independent that supplies so many of Ireland's revival labels.
The rum cask folds demerara sugar, dried banana and a warm molasses note through two decades of bourbon built vanilla and orchard fruit. At 54% it is sweet up front but dry at the edges, finishing on brown sugar, malt and soft spice. Rum finishes suit Cooley's fruity spirit unusually well, and at this age the marriage reads as depth rather than novelty.
