Velier bottled this Nine Leaves rum, a 2020 distillate from the small Japanese producer aged five years and finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks. Velier carries serious standing in the rum world, and Nine Leaves brings a distinctive Japanese sensibility, so the pairing makes for an intriguing bottle.
The PX finish drives the profile, layering raisin, nuts and dried fruit over the spirit, with floral, citrus and a vegetal, sake like character that marks it as unmistakably Nine Leaves. Bottled at 59%, it is concentrated and warm, finishing on wood, citrus and anise. This is very much an experimental sipper where the Sherry leads and the rum base provides an unusual backdrop, one for curious drinkers comfortable with higher strength and happy to explore Japanese rum off the beaten path.
