Tropical fruit and ripe banana meet glue and polished oak in this 15 year Hampden, a Trelawny pot still rum of controlled ester funk and old wood, bottled by Velier at a confident 50%.
Description
From Hampden Estate in Trelawny, the reference point for high ester Jamaican rum, this is a 15 year old aged entirely under the Caribbean sun and selected by the Italian house Velier. Hampden works in the old way, with long wild fermentation, double retort pot stills and traditional muck and dunder, and bottles its rum without added sugar or colouring. One of the lighter marques in the range sits behind this release, an LROK in the Wedderburn band rather than the explosive high ester end, so the funk reads as controlled rather than wild.
The profile leans on overripe tropical fruit and ripe banana, with the signature ester lift of glue and varnish carried over from fermentation. Fifteen tropical years, where evaporation runs high and the cask works fast, add depth and a polished woodiness that frame the fruit without burying it. At 50% it stays full and oily, more elegant and composed than a young overproof Hampden, a slow pour for drinkers who already know the house style and want the version that long ageing rounds into shape.
