A high-ester Hampden <>H magnum from Velier, this 8 Year Old goes loud with solvents, glue and tropical pineapple over firm spice and wood, distilled on the double-retort pot still and bottled unsweetened-leaning at a full 60%.
Description
This 8 Year Old Hampden, bottled by Velier from a magnum in the Cristina de Middel collection, carries the H marque, one of the estate's higher-ester recipes. Hampden works entirely on double-retort pot stills in Trelawny and is the reference for explosive Jamaican funk, here distilled from molasses in 2017 and matured in ex-bourbon at origin before bottling at cask strength.
The nose is loud with tropical fruit, ester and pineapple over wood, the palate keeps the esters, glue and pineapple bright, and the finish is unmistakably funky, ester and glue trailing into tropical fruit. Tropically aged and bottled at 60%, this is a powerful, characterful pour with more sharpness and less polish than the calmer marks, made for drinkers who actively want the solvent-and-fruit intensity that defines high-ester Hampden.
