A young DOK from Velier’s Cristina de Middel magnum, Hampden’s highest ester mark turned into a pineapple-and-solvent funk bomb with surprising creaminess and balance, bottled cask strength from a four-year 2021 vintage at 60%.
Description
Velier bottled this Hampden in magnum as part of its Cristina de Middel series, and DOK is the headline: Hampden's highest ester mark, sitting at the ~1,600 ceiling that defines the loudest end of Jamaican pot still. Distilled in 2021 and aged just four years at 60%, this is youthful, intense and unmistakable.
From the double-retort pot still and molasses, it is all pineapple and solvent, on the nose, on the palate and through the finish, with ester and young wood behind it. What sets it apart from many young DOK casks is a creamy texture and a surprising harmony that makes the strength and ester load easier to drink than expected. Velier's tropical ageing and full-proof house approach show throughout. Its added-sugar status is unconfirmed, though it reads dry. A vivid, divisive funk bomb for seasoned drinkers who chase the very top of the marque scale.
