A 60% Hampden LROK magnum from Velier, this 9 Year Old leans rounded rather than wild, tropical fruit, candied pineapple and young wood layered with caramel and mild spice, distilled on the double-retort pot still and bottled at cask strength.
Description
Bottled by Velier from a magnum, this is a 9 Year Old Hampden carrying the LROK marque, the mid-tier Hampden recipe rather than one of the loudest marks. Hampden works entirely on double-retort pot stills in Trelawny and is the benchmark for ester-driven Jamaican funk, here distilled from molasses in 2016 and matured in ex-bourbon before bottling at full strength.
The profile sits in the more rounded lane of the house, candied pineapple and tropical fruit with light solvent lift on the nose, caramel and mild spice filling out the palate, and a warm, woody, fruity finish. Tropically aged and bottled at 60% cask strength, it is a well-made expression that keeps Hampden's character without shouting, a good neat pour for drinkers who want the marque's fruit and funk in a gentler register.
