A high-ester Hampden from Velier’s Cristina de Middel series, the HGML marque punching out pineapple and gluey esters over toasted nuts and dry oak, expressive on the nose and tighter on the palate, bottled cask strength from a seven-year 2018 vintage at 60%.
Description
Velier bottled this Hampden as part of its Cristina de Middel collection, the HGML marque, distilled in 2018 and aged seven years in ex-bourbon at 60%. HGML is one of Hampden's heavier, high-ester marks, so this sits firmly in funky territory.
From the double-retort pot still and molasses, the nose is expressive and classically Hampden, pineapple, gluey ester and fruit, while the palate brings fruity ester, toasted nuts and a drier, woodier turn before a warm, spicy, fruit-and-oak finish. The vivid nose tends to outshine the tighter, more wood-driven palate, which leans dry. Velier's tropical ageing and full-proof house style come through clearly. Its added-sugar status is unconfirmed, though it reads as a dry, full-proof pot-still rum, a punchy HGML for drinkers who already love Hampden's loudest marks.
