A 21 Year Old DDL Demerara blend bottled by Velier at 50%, unsweetened and very drinkable, rich and woody with dark chocolate, dried fruit, tobacco, anise and a herbal freshness.
Description
Velier bottled this 2004 as a high-proof old Demerara blend drawn from DDL's stills, a more accessible entry into the bottler's serious Guyana range than its towering single-still cask-strength releases. At 50% and twenty-one years old, it balances depth with genuine drinkability.
Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon, it is rich, woody and chocolatey, with dried fruit, tobacco, anise and a herbal lift running through it. The nose shows wood, roasted notes, raisin and spice, the palate turns roasted, fruity and woody, and the finish carries spice, cherry and liquorice. Bottled unsweetened, it pulls the different stills together into a coherent, layered Demerara that drinks easily yet stays deep. This is a fine first step into serious Guyana for the curious, equally at home contemplated slowly or shared at a tasting.
