A low-ester Clarendon from Velier’s Alex Webb magnum, dry and oak-forward with coconut, mango and citrus over caramel and plenty of toasted wood, bottled unsweetened from a ten-year 2014 vintage at 60%.
Description
Velier, the Genoese house that sits at the top of collectible rum, bottled this Clarendon in a magnum as part of its Alex Webb edition, distilled in 2014 and aged ten years in ex-bourbon at 60%. The MBS marque places it at the cleaner, lower-ester end of Clarendon's range.
Molasses-based and pot still, it shows chocolate, caramel and tropical fruit over wood on the nose, then a palate of vanilla, mango, coconut and citrus framed by firm toasted oak. The funk is muted, so this drinks dry, woody and clean rather than wild, with the cask doing much of the work. Velier's signature tropical ageing, full proof and additive-free approach all show through. Certified unsweetened and balanced, it is a reliable, well-made Clarendon, sipped neat or with a few drops of water.
