Description
The Spirit of Art 2023 Grenada 1993 is a single cask rum bottled by Valinch & Mallet and distilled in Grenada in 1993. The rum originates from the historic Westerhall Estate, located in Saint David parish on the south eastern coast of Grenada, one of the island’s long established rum producers.
Westerhall Estate ceased distillation in 1996, placing this spirit among the final years of production at the distillery. No new distillate has been produced on site since that time, making surviving casks from this period increasingly scarce. As a result, this bottling represents closed distillery stock, drawn from a distillery that is no longer operational.
Produced from molasses and distilled on column stills, the rum was matured in oak for a total of thirty years before being bottled in 2023. Ageing followed Valinch & Mallet’s established hybrid approach, with a significant portion of maturation taking place in a tropical climate before the cask was transferred to Europe for the remainder of its ageing. This method allows for early concentration and structure from tropical ageing, followed by slower, more controlled development under continental conditions.
Bottled brut de fût at 57.7 percent ABV, the rum is presented without dilution. The style reflects a long aged, traditional profile, favouring dryness, balance, and controlled oak influence rather than sweetness or overt intensity. With an outturn of approximately 252 bottles, this is a tightly limited release offering a fully mature example of Grenada rum from a closed distillery.
The label artwork for this edition was created by Italian artist Diego Zangirolami. Trained at the High School of Fine Arts and in Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin, his work is rooted in European artistic tradition and is characterised by finely detailed miniature paintings. His compositions often combine figures, landscapes, architecture, and references to history, literature, poetry, and mythology, rendered with precise draftsmanship and a refined painting technique. His collaboration with Valinch & Mallet provides the visual identity for the Spirit of Art series.
