Herbs, walnut, pencil shavings and oily honey define this 26 Year Old continental Uitvlugt from Rum Artesanal, a 60.9 percent Port Mourant style single cask with a long, woody, herbal and firmly bitter finish.
Description
Rum Artesanal, the Heinz Eggert label, bottled this single cask of Uitvlugt from the 1997 vintage, twenty-six years old and matured in Europe rather than the tropics. The heavily herbal walnut and pencil character is classic continental Port Mourant style, recreated on the Uitvlugt still, and the continental ageing keeps it gentler in losses if not in intensity.
Molasses based, finished in port and unsweetened, it runs powerful and herbal. The nose gives herbs, pencil shavings, dried fruit and walnut, the palate piles on pencil shavings, nutmeg and firm tannins, and the finish brings oily honey, herbs and a bitter, woody grip. That pronounced bitterness on the close is the one divisive note. At 60.9 percent it is full throttle and unmistakably continental, a long, intense Port Mourant style Demerara for drinkers who love the herbal end of Guyana.
