A pot still Uitvlugt from DDL’s cask finish series, this 15 year old took on white port casks to fold continental fruit and a touch of sweetness around dry, leathery wood, dried currants and black pepper, unsweetened at 57.9%.
Description
Uitvlugt El Dorado Special Cask Finish White Port Casks 2006 is a distillery bottling from DDL's limited cask finish range, built on pot still spirit carrying the Uitvlugt marque, a closed-estate name now recreated at Diamond and prized for its refined, fruity, lightly spiced character. Like the rest of this series it is declared unsweetened and bottled at full strength, which sets it apart from the dosed standard El Dorado range.
The rum was finished in white port casks, the fortified wine adding a basket of continental fruit and a little sweetness that balances the drier core. The nose is woody and leathery with a spiced edge, while the palate brings dried fruit, dried currants and a dry, almost dusty grip. The finish carries wood, black pepper and a polished note. At 57.9% with no added sugar, the port works with the Uitvlugt rather than burying it, a well-judged marriage of fruit and dry Demerara wood.
