Description
Where most older Tyrconnell releases lean on wine cask finishes, this 16 Years Old, bottled in 2017 for Europe, stays entirely in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. It comes from Cooley in Co. Louth, the distillery that re-established independent Irish whiskey in 1987, where the malt is double distilled for a slightly weightier, fruitier spirit than the Irish norm.
Sixteen undisturbed years in ex-bourbon wood concentrate the house notes rather than repaint them: fresh orchard fruit, honey, vanilla and fragrant citrus over a malt extract base. At 46% it is a patient, uncluttered malt, the plain oak allowing the double distilled Cooley fruit to sit front and centre.
