Tyrconnell is the unpeated single malt of the Cooley distillery in Co. Louth, founded by John Teeling in 1987 as the independent that broke the monopoly on Irish distilling, and its name revives an old Watt distillery label honouring a racehorse that won at odds of one hundred to one. Unusually for Ireland the malt is double distilled in the Scottish manner, and wine cask finishes such as this 10 Years Old Madeira, bottled in 2013 for the German market, are the range's signature.

A decade in ex-bourbon American oak lays down vanilla and fresh orchard fruit before a finishing period in Madeira casks folds in milk chocolate, dried orange and a gentle winey nuttiness. Bottled at 46%, it stays true to the fragrant, fruity Tyrconnell house character while the fortified wine wood gives it a warmer, sweeter close.
