Description
The XO is Tullamore D.E.W.'s rum finished expression, a triple blend of pot still, malt and grain first matured in ex-bourbon oak and then moved into rum casks for a second spell in wood. It comes from the modern Offaly distillery, where all three Irish whiskey styles are triple distilled under one roof.
The rum casks do the defining work, wrapping the soft base spirit in a warm, sugary sweetness that brings honey, vanilla and a faint tropical note to the fore. At 43% it sits just above the standard strength, with a rounder body and a longer, sweeter finish. It stays true to the gentle Tullamore character while showing what a rum cask can add.
