Description
The XO in the name points to the extra rum cask ageing that sets this Tullamore D.E.W. apart from the original. Distilled at the modern Offaly distillery, a triple blend of pot still, malt and grain, it is first brought up in ex-bourbon oak before a second maturation in casks that once held Caribbean rum.
That rum finish is the signature. It layers a warm, molasses tinged sweetness over the base spirit, drawing out honey, vanilla and dried fruit with a nutty edge and a hint of the tropical. Bottled at 43%, a touch above the standard, it carries a little more weight while staying true to the soft, rounded Tullamore character. An easy introduction to what cask finishing can do.
