Description
Tsunuki 5 Years Old 2017, released as SMWS 160.1, is a single cask single malt from the Tsunuki distillery in Kagoshima prefecture, Hombo Shuzo's southern Kyushu site opened in 2016. Distilled in 2017 and bottled in 2022 by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society for the European market, this was among the first single cask Tsunuki releases to reach Europe, giving collectors an early look at the distillery's maturing spirit.
The cask is a 1st Fill Ex-Sherry Hogshead, which exerts a strong influence over the five years of Kagoshima maturation. The sherry wood drives the profile firmly toward dried fruit and a rich, dark sweetness, with the warming humidity of southern Kyushu compressing what might take longer in a cooler climate. Bottled at 57.7% without dilution, the cask strength presentation gives full access to the interplay between the sherry extraction and Tsunuki's typically fruity, rounded distillery character.
