An añejo from the Seychelles distillery Takamaka, gentle and approachable with vanilla, young wood, caramel and honey giving way to a fruity, lightly spiced finish touched with coffee, a soft and easy island sipper at 40%.
Description
Takamaka Rum Zenn is made by Trois Freres on the Seychelles, an Indian Ocean distillery best known for its pot still rum from fresh local sugar cane that has built a molasses based range alongside it. Bottled at a soft 40% with no age statement, this is an everyday, approachable sipper that shows surprising intensity for its gentle strength.
The molasses base shows a youthful side, with young wood threading through the aroma alongside vanilla, caramel and honey. The palate stays mild and well mannered, young oak and soft spice carrying the vanilla, before a finish that turns gently fruity with spice, vanilla and a hint of coffee. There is more here than the low proof and presumed young age might suggest, dried apricot and a pleasant woodiness adding interest. It makes a relaxed introduction to island rum from an origin many drinkers have yet to explore.
