A no-age Dominican solera rum from Tres Hombres, the XVIII Anos Solera at 43%, soft and noticeably sweet with caramel, cocoa and dried fruit on the nose and a fruity, raisin-and-dark-chocolate palate.
Description
Tres Hombres bottles this Dominican rum as an XVIII Anos solera. The XVIII points to the oldest component in the solera blend rather than an age, so this is a solera-built rum carrying a trace of older spirit, not an eighteen-year-old, and it is best described in those honest terms.
The base is molasses rum married in a solera and bottled at 43%. The multi-cask solera character shows in layered fruit, caramel, cocoa and dried fruit on the nose, with a palate of fruit, raisin, dark chocolate and wood and a spiced, caramel-and-fruit finish. It runs decidedly sweet, an easy after-dinner sipper rather than a dry, austere rum. Taken for what it is, a soft, sweet-leaning Dominican solera with a pleasant spread of cask-driven flavour, it makes for very easy drinking.
