Description
This Tormore was from the independent bottler Cadenhead's matured to 30 year old from 1988 and bottled at 47.2%. Only 192 bottles were released. Tormore was founded in 1958 on the A95 in the heart of Speyside; it is a listed building, the white cathedral of Speyside. The distillery is sometimes called the white cathedral of Speyside for its grand design.
Distilled in swan neck stills fitted with purifiers, on soft Achvochkie Burn water, giving the structured, nutty Speyside spirit. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla under the orchard fruit. Very old Tormore turns profound, waxy and nutty yet still clean. A patient maturation suits the light, nutty Tormore character. Elixir Distillers bought Tormore in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand. Most of the spirit matures off site, much of it in refill ex-Bourbon wood. The distillery sits near Grantown-on-Spey, in sight of the Cromdale Hills.
At a full 47.2% it is intense yet nutty. The refill oak lending honey and vanilla, with almond, apple and a clean citrus. The mouthfeel is light, the fruit carried on a nutty body. Almond and a dry oak see out the finish. This is a Speysider from the white cathedral of the Spey.
