Description
The Whisky Jury MHOBA The Ester Hunter Catch 7 2021 is a single cask from the MHOBA distillery in South Africa, bottled by The Whisky Jury at a ferocious 67.55%. MHOBA has built a name for high ester, characterful rum, and this unsweetened, ex bourbon matured cask pushes that reputation to its limit, an Ester Hunter release made for drinkers who actively chase funk.
The profile is loud and feral, recalling the wildest clairins. The nose is overripe pineapple, glue and varnish with butter, biscuit dough, cheese, wet hay and smoke, the palate overripe and intense with pineapple, a Clairin like cheese note and bacon, and the finish overripe and salty with a slightly metallic edge. Despite the chaos on the nose it can turn surprisingly balanced on the palate, the endless finish rewarding patience. At nearly 68% it is uncompromising, a crazy, characterful sipper for seasoned funk lovers or a bold mixer, and well beyond gentle territory.
