Description
The Rum Mercenary is an independent bottler, and this Black Label release takes Dominican rum from Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos, a column distilled molasses spirit in the Spanish style. Unlike the soft, reduced strength rons the country is known for, this is a full proof single cask, drawn from one barrel and bottled without taming.
Eight years of ex-bourbon ageing has built a concentrated spirit, with fruit on the nose, caramel across the palate and chocolate carrying into the finish. At 62.4% the strength is considerable, so a measured splash of water opens it up and reveals more of the sweet, oak driven depth underneath. The sugar status is not declared, and the cask strength format keeps the focus on the spirit. This is a bolder, more intense take on Dominican ron, aimed at drinkers who prefer their rum at full power rather than soft and easy.
