Description
This Grays bottling comes from Mauritius via the Belgian house The Nectar, released in its Nectar of the Daily Drams series and selected for La Maison du Whisky. Distilled in 2010 and aged twelve years, it is a single cask at 53.4% that keeps the cool, minty signature of Mauritian molasses rum while taking on the colour and weight of a Port cask maturation.
Column distilled from molasses and then matured in Port wood, it shows how a wine cask can deepen rather than smother a distillery's character. Dense dark berries, blackcurrant and blackberry meet chocolate, menthol and tannic wood spice, with the Port lending a sweet, fruity richness without tipping into syrup. The mint and tobacco of the base rum still read through. Bottled at cask strength, it is a rich, fruit forward sipper for drinkers who enjoy cask finishes done with restraint.
