The Flame Vodka

The Flame is produced by the CARAT Distillery in Slovakia and takes a different line from the usual race to neutrality. The spirit is distilled several times for clarity, but a particular distillation technique is used to keep a warm, spicy backbone rather than scrubbing every trace of character away. Multiple distillation still removes the heaviest fusel oils, so the result is clean rather than rough, but the cereal body is left full enough to carry a peppery edge. Bottled at 40%, it is positioned as a vodka with a deliberate fiery finish instead of a quiet mixer.

The nose shows fresh cereal and delicate citrus over a slightly spicy note. The palate is full-bodied with a gentle grain sweetness that builds into a peppery, warming finish that lingers. That built-in spice is exactly what a Bloody Mary wants: use The Flame as the base, lean on plenty of fresh black pepper and horseradish, and let the vodka's own warmth amplify the heat of the mix rather than disappearing into the tomato.
