The fifth Sommelier Selection in Teeling's Small Batch Series turns to the Douro valley, finishing the Dublin house blend in red wine casks that once held wine from old vine plantings. Released for Europe in 2022 at 24,000 bottles, it is one of the wider runs in a series built on the friendship between Irish whiskey and the wine world.
The blend of malt and grain whiskeys began in ex-bourbon casks before the Douro wood took over, layering dried fruit, dark chocolate, walnut and a sherried, cooked fruit richness over fresh oak. Bottled at 46% without chill filtration, it leans darker and more autumnal than the white wine editions in the same series, a winter weight pour from the Liberties.
