Description
Blackpitts is Teeling's peated single malt, named for the tannery district beside the Newmarket distillery, and Big Smoke is its cask strength expression, released for Europe in 2022 in a run of 8,400 bottles. Where most peated malt is double distilled in the Scottish manner, Blackpitts passes three times through the Dublin coppers, which rounds the smoke into something softer and fruitier than its strength suggests.
Maturation in ex-bourbon barrels keeps the frame simple: vanilla and honey beneath a drift of dry turf smoke, toasted cereal, a leathery pipe tobacco note and the flinty coal gas edge that peat devotees will recognise. Undiluted at 56.5%, it takes water well, opening toward sweet barley and soft citrus as the smoke loosens.
