Grain whiskey rarely gets this treatment. Teeling's Single Grain 15 Years Old, released in 2023 for Europe, takes column distilled Irish grain whiskey through fifteen years in ex-bourbon barrels and a finishing period in Sauvignon Blanc wine casks, bottled at a natural cask strength of 50%.
Grain whiskey's soft, sweet frame of toffee, coconut and vanilla takes wine casks beautifully, and the Sauvignon Blanc wood brings gooseberry, fresh citrus and a crisp white fruit acidity that keeps fifteen years of oak in check. Nutty older wood notes round out the finish. At full strength it has unusual presence for the style, sweet, vivid and long.
