Description
Teeling's Explorers Series follows Irish whiskey out into the world, and this Japanese Edition, a 15 Years Old blend released in 2023 for travel retail, finishes its journey in casks that held mugi shochu, Japan's traditional barley spirit. Stock of this age long predates the 2015 Newmarket distillery, mature whiskey finished and bottled under the family label.
After primary maturation in ex-bourbon casks, the shochu wood adds a gently savoury, toasted grain dimension, an umami thread through the blend's malt extract sweetness and soft vanilla. Bottled at 46%, it is a quiet, textural whiskey rather than a loud one, barley meeting barley across two traditions, and one of the more original finishes in the Irish category.
