Description
From Kingsbury comes this Springbank, a 30 year old from 1991, drawn from cask 318 and bottled at 56%. 175 bottles in all. A family distillery since 1828, Springbank is still owned by the Mitchell family, five generations on. Uniquely in Scotch, every drop is floor malted, distilled, matured and bottled on the one site.
The spirit was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, and run into cast iron worm tubs. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the make lead. At this great age the malt is full and waxy, the fruit deep and the salt mellow. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its briny, mineral lift. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts.
Undiluted at 56%, it is intense. An oily, maritime character with light peat meet vanilla, honey and coconut from the cask. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. Sea salt and fruit draw out the close. This is the cult Campbeltown malt from J and A Mitchell.
