Description
This is a Springbank single malt, chosen and bottled by Meadowside Blending matured to 17 year old from 1996, drawn from cask 585 and bottled at 50.1%. The outturn was 577 bottles. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. Campbeltown was its own protected whisky region long before the revival.
It was floor malted, lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, and slowly worm tub cooled. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. A patient maturation suits the rich, complex Campbeltown spirit. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth. A 1940s Porteus mill and an open iron mash tun are part of the old setup. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations.
At a natural 50.1% it is full and oily. An oily, maritime character with light peat sit over dried fruit and a walnut richness. It is rich and layered, the fruit and salt well matched. The finish runs deep, briny and warm. This is an oily, salty Campbeltown classic.
