A 32 Year Old single cask Port Mourant from Silver Seal, finished in port and leaning hard into wood, with classic dark dried fruit, prune and leather on the nose but a notably bitter, oak-driven palate at 49.2%.
Description
A Port Mourant 1990 selected for La Maison du Whisky by Silver Seal, the Modena house respected for collector-grade single casks at moderate proof. It comes off the icon among Guyana's heritage stills, the double wooden pot built from greenheart, and at 32 years the wood has very much taken charge.
Maturated from molasses and finished in port wood at 49.2%, it noses on classic Port Mourant darkness, woody, with barrel, leather and prune, then turns bitter and intensely oaky on the palate, the finish staying woody, leathery and bitter. Unsweetened and at moderate cask strength, it is an honest split decision: the dried-fruit nose is the highlight while the palate runs very tannic and polarising after so long in cask. One for drinkers who want to taste how far Port Mourant wood influence can go, sampled before committing.
