Description
Shizuoka 5 Years Old 2018 Cask #740 is a single cask single malt from Gaiaflow's Shizuoka distillery in Shizuoka prefecture, selected by Scottish independent Blackadder and bottled for the global market in 2023. Five years in a Bourbon Barrel gives this 2018 vintage cask a more developed profile than the younger Shizuoka single casks in this series, and the flavour data confirms it: a richer, rounder expression centred on malt extract, vanilla and a warm nutty depth.
At 63.8% cask strength, the bourbon wood's contribution is clear and generous, with vanilla leading and the malt extract character adding sweetness and body. The nutty note is characteristic of the Shizuoka house style as it develops in American oak, where the clean new make gradually takes on more texture and weight without losing its inherent freshness. The cedar washback influence is still present in the background, keeping the spirit's fruit-forward clarity intact beneath the oak.
