A vintage Austrian Sekt from Schlumberger in Vienna, made by traditional bottle fermentation from Chardonnay, Weissburgunder and Welschriesling. Orchard apple and pear meet a toasty, biscuity depth built by extended time on the lees, all finished dry as a low dosage Brut.

Description
Schlumberger built its reputation in the 1840s on traditional bottle fermentation, the same second fermentation used in Champagne, and its Jahrgangssekt carries that method into a single vintage wine. The base of Chardonnay, Weissburgunder and Welschriesling undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle rather than a tank, then rests on its lees so that autolysis can build bready, savoury complexity beneath the fruit. Riddling and disgorgement follow in the traditional way, and the dosage is kept low for a Brut style, letting structure and acidity lead.
Expect a pale gold colour and a fine, persistent bead. The nose moves from green apple and pear towards toasted bread, biscuit and a hint of hazelnut, and the palate is dry and firm with a long, savoury finish that marks it out from tank made Sekt. Serve at 6 to 8 degrees in a white wine glass rather than a narrow flute, so the aromatics have room to show. It makes a fine aperitif and stands up to shellfish, white fish and a wedge of hard, nutty cheese.
