Description
Schlumberger has led Austrian sparkling wine since 1842 and works this bottling from Grüner Veltliner, the country's flagship white grape, under organic certification. It is made by the traditional method that the house pioneered in Austria, with a second fermentation in bottle and ageing on the lees, which builds a fine bready complexity around the grape's fresh, peppery character. The Brut finish keeps the wine dry.
The colour is a bright pale yellow with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is led by green apple and citrus with a floral edge and the white pepper note that marks good Grüner Veltliner, backed by a hint of fresh bread from the lees. On the palate it is dry, crisp and precise, the orchard fruit and firm acidity carried to a clean finish. Serve well chilled at 6 to 8 degrees in a white wine glass. It makes a lively aperitif and suits white fish, shellfish and green salads.
