Blood orange floods the glass, full-bodied and fresh, with a velvety lemon edge and a savoury vegetal undertone. New Zealand’s rebel-spirited Scapegrace draws the gin’s striking deep red from aronia berries, butterfly pea flower and blood oranges, all natural. Vivid to look at, smooth to drink.

Scapegrace was founded by Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin, two friends who named their brand after a word for a likeable rogue and have run with that mischief ever since. Blood Moon is their answer to the conventional clear gin: a deep, arresting red drawn entirely from natural botanicals, aronia berries, butterfly pea flower and blood oranges colouring the spirit during distillation rather than any added pigment.
The nose carries blood orange and lemon over a faint vegetal note. The palate is full-bodied and velvety yet fresh, citrus and blood orange leading, into a long finish. It makes a dramatic gin and tonic, the red gin blushing through pale tonic over ice, finished with a half-wheel of orange to match the fruit at its core.
