Velvety and full-bodied, with a curious sweetness of pineapple and roasted sweet potato playing against a clean juniper backbone. The colour is the talking point: inky black, drawn not from dye but from a pass through activated charcoal that strips and deepens in equal measure. Striking on the eye, gently rounded on the tongue.

Description
The work of two New Zealand friends, Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin, Scapegrace takes its name from an old word for a likeable rogue, and the spirit lives up to the mischief. This Black bottling is filtered through activated carbon, a process that removes impurities while lending the gin its arresting, opaque hue. The result needs no artificial colouring to turn heads on a back bar.
The nose is unexpected: vegetal notes, chokeberry and saffron alongside a flash of pineapple. On the palate it is fresh and velvety, full in body, with that tropical sweetness carried through to a long, woody close. Pour it over a single large cube of ice and reach for an elderflower tonic to keep the colour centre stage.
