A 15 year Reunion Savanna single cask at 60.1%, aged in sherry wood for a dark, tannic ride of chocolate, dried fruit and charred oak with a sulphury gunpowder edge, intense, dry and frankly polarising.
Description
Part of Savanna's Wild Island series, this Voie Lactee is a 15 year old single cask from a 2008 Reunion vintage, a molasses based rum bottled unsweetened at cask strength, 60.1%. Long sherry cask maturation pushes it well away from the distillery's grassy agricole side and into deep, brooding territory.
The sherry wood dominates, bringing dark chocolate, dried fruit and heavily charred oak, with a distinct sulphury, gunpowder note that lovers of heavily sherried whisky will recognise. The palate is dense and roasted, the finish very long and firmly tannic. This is an intense, divisive glass, thrilling to sherry cask devotees and difficult for anyone put off by sulphur. It asks for slow sipping and plenty of air, a wild Reunion single cask that makes no attempt at easy charm.
